I really can't put my finger on the pulse here...I have no idea what KC is going to do when they're on the clock. Of course, the consensus is they will pick Aaron Curry - arguably the best overall prospect in this draft and most ready to make a huge impact at a position of need.
However...Pioli has gone out and found a couple of old-timers at linebacker in Vrabel and Thomas - neither of which are long term solutions, but could allow the Chiefs some flexibility in not having to take Curry at #3, or allow them to trade out of the pick and bolster another position of need later in round 1. Right now, the top 4 linebackers on this roster are Derrick Johnson, Vrabel, Thomas, and Demorrio Williams. If they Chiefs go to a 3-4, these are the guys at this point. Not great by any stretch of the imagination - but did you see what they trotted onto the field at this position last year???
The Chiefs also need help on both lines. If they move to a 3-4, I would assume your DT will be Tank Tyler due to his size and ability to clog up running lanes...which means Dorsey may move to an end position in this type of D. Not really ideal...but many seem to think he can play there should the defensive shift happen. That also leaves Tamba Hali on the other end.
On the offensive line...they just drafted Albert in 2008 and he became the starting left tackle. Do they really want to spend the #3 on a guy who will come in and play right tackle? Or do they spend it on another left tackle and move Albert to the right side (or even inside to a guard spot)? I can't imagine them moving such a highly touted pick inside to guard...but could see them drafting another tackle and having bookends for the next 10 years. However...if they want a right tackle, they could get one later in the draft.
This leaves them looking at another possibility in Crabtree at WR. Todd Haley built his rep on the Arizona vertical game...and having Crabtree, Bowe, and Cassel would give him some good parts to work with (plus Tony G. if they don't move him).
Not sure which direction they'll go....but I'm thinking they'll want to pick again in round 2 (traded pick away), which means they'll likely look to trade back, or trade someone like Gonzo for a round 2...or do both....
Or, of course, they could just do what everyone thinks they'll do and draft Curry.
Should be interesting to see how it all goes down.
